Teaching Kids How To Read

A fine reading skill is necessary for a successful future. While the miracles of reading bring wisdom and delight to children, not all children find learning to read amusing. And when a kid is not having fun, it will take him longer to learn. So the first thing that you need to do if you like to teach your child to read is to make it exciting for him.

To teach him how to read, it is important that you designate time with your child so you can fully lead him through and see his development. The key to improving his reading skills is reading aloud. It can make a small difference if you encourage him to read aloud each sign and billboard that you pass by on the street or in the mall. Aside from enhancing his pronunciation and vocabulary, that trick can likewise boost their speaking skills. If he messes up a word, you can instantly hear and correct him.

Schedule reading sessions every day. Just memorize to make it enjoyable, though, by letting him pick the book or even song lyrics to read. That way he can look forward to each session and he won't think it monotonous. If he encounters a new word, you can urge him to ask what it means. Also give sentence examples so he can permanently add the new term to his vocabulary.

Develop his fondness for books by taking him to a bookstore or library and letting him select the books he wants. A book with loads of pop-up pictures and activities will generally grab hold of little kid's attention. You can also suggest books to him and he will make a decision for himself whether he wants it or not. You can also bring him to see a film based on popular children's books like any Dr. Seuss movies. That will hopefully ignite his interest to read the book version.

For kids who are slightly older, you can help develop their fondness for books by bringing them to watch fantasy novel-based movies like Harry Potter. You have to apply more care, though, in allowing them to decide their own books. Some have unsuitable content for children.

Play activities with him. Word games like word searches and kiddie crossword puzzles can challenge him to learn fresh words. It will also make him driven, making him want to search for new words for himself through reading.
